Meet John Jackson aka JJ

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm JJ, the owner and operator of Scotland’s original beard care brand, Braw Beard. I started it back in 2012 after breaking my back in a downhill miuntain bike crash.

How did you first come across Chris’s House?

I was introduced to Chris's House in around 2016/17. Braw Beard produces a collaboration beard oil with The Glasgow Beard and Moustache Club. £2 from every bottle sold goes to their chosen charity, Chris’s House.

What inspired you to raise money for Chris’s House specifically?

Initially, it was through the GBMC but for the last 4 years, we’ve also raised money from the raffle at our annual event, The Braw Beard and Moustache Championships held in Glasgow. Suicide is something that has affected everyone, whether that is through someone they know or it has been more personal. With a customer community who are mostly men, we hear about it all too often so it's a cause very close to our hearts.

Does mental health support mean something personal to you?

It does, being present online, I experience my fair share of negative comments and messages. I don’t understand the mentality that makes a man want to tear down another man, but it happens.

Was there a moment that made you decide, ‘I need to do something?

I try to spread positivity through our Youtube channel.

What did you do to raise money

We raise money for Chris's House through The Braw Beard and Moustache Championships raffle and the GBMC beard oil. .

How did you find the experience overall?

Donating to charity is something I’ve always done at Braw Beard, the experience with Chris’s House is great, it's easy to donate and there's not the added pressure to continue to donate via mail and emails like some charities push.

What was your proudest moment during your fundraising?

Maxing out the raffle books at the latest Braw Beard and Moustache Championships. We sold out, raising £600.

What would you say to someone thinking about supporting Chris’s House?

Definitely worth supporting, it's a cause that affects everyone in one shape or form. The people behind the charity have always been a pleasure to work with.
